Programming Hope is an original feature-length documentary following the lives of the founders and workers and the development of a growing non-profit company that trains and employs autistic adults to design and code videos games and apps for mobile devices.

Over 70 minutes of original music was composed by Chris Joye for the film. Influenced by post-rock bands such as Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Hammock, and more, the base of the score lies in this style of electric guitar and percussion-driven structuring, layered upon and building in dynamic levels, yet he also blends modern and classical instrumentation in with it (such as solo violin and viola, a string quartet, banjo, pedal steel, ukulele, cajon, chains, ocean drums, synthesizers, and more). The main thematic motif (a descending minor third) came around after much experimentation. Ultimately deciding upon a very simplistic melody, Chris weaves this idea throughout the film in a multitude of variations.

Most of the score was recorded in his basement, aside from the drum kit, most of the percussion, the string quartet in the title track "Programming Hope", and the banjo/pedal steel - all of which was recorded live at Side 3 Studios in Denver, Colorado, where it was also mixed (in surround and stereo) and mastered.

    Performers include:
Carl Sorenson - Drum kit, ocean drum, cajon, djembe, shaker, crasher, chains, and much of the other percussion
Sphere Ensemble (Beth Rosbach, Marcin Arendt, Christine Short, and Aniel Cabán) - Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello
Dusty Rider - Banjo and pedal steel
Marie Winget - Solo violin and solo viola
    Chris Joye - Everything else

about

Chris Joye Seattle, Washington

Chris Joye is a film composer based in Seattle, Washington.
His stylistic writing skills are very broad, but Programming Hope called for his preferred style, a self-descbried "indie-rock crossover", in which he blends the indie/post-rock style (Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy...) with classical elements, such as strings, celesta, and more modern instrumentation. ... more
